TPX: Thermodynamic Properties for Excel

Installation Notes
------------------

To finish the installation of TPX, start Excel and open a new workbook.
On the Tools menu, select Add-Ins..., browse to where you installed
TPX, and select TPX.XLA. The floating TPX toolbar should now appear.

Documentation for TPX is to be found on the TPX web site at
http://adam.caltech.edu/tpx

Running the Examples
--------------------

It is recommended that you first look over the workbooks in the examples
subdirectory. When you open one of the example workbooks for the first
time, a message may appear asking if you want to update
the external links in the workbook. ANSWER "NO" TO THIS QUESTION. Then
select Fix Links on the TPX toolbar. This should fix all unresolved
external links.

Using the Template
------------------

A worksheet template is provided in the "templates" subdirectory which contains
already-made process diagrams (T-S, P-H, ...) showing the vapor dome in each
representation. Changing the substance name (on the "substance" sheet) or the
units causes the vapor domes on all plots to recalculate. As described in the
documentation, once you create some state points on a blank page, you can add
the points to all process plots at once using the TPX pop-up menu.

Troubleshooting
---------------

Some possible problems and their solution:

When installing TPX.XLA, the "Add-Ins..." item is dimmed.

This occurs if no workbook is open, or something else
(a dialog box, etc.) is active. Click on a worksheet cell and try again.

Every calculated cell contains the error message #NAME?

This means Excel does not recognize the TPX function names. Go to the Excel
Tools menu, select "Add-Ins", and verify that TPX is in the list and
the box next to "TPX" is checked.

Every calculated cell contains the error message #VALUE!

This probably means that Excel cannot find TPX.DLL. It should be located in
the "system" directory, for example C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM, or C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32.

Problems adding points to plots using the pop-up menu

The pop-up menu command "Add to Plots" can only be used for plots on separate
chart pages, not ones embedded in a worksheet. Right-click on the plot, and select "Location"
to move it to its own sheet. Then rename the sheet (by clicking on the tab at the bottom)
depending on what the plot represents ("TS Plot", "PV Plot", etc.)

Using TPX on a computer with a write-protected C: drive

If TPX.DLL can't be installed in the system directory, then put it on the PATH, or in the
directory which appears when you select "File/Open" in Excel. But note that if an older version
of TPX.DLL or TPX.XLA exists on the C: drive, it may continue to be used by Excel. A better
solution is to have the system manager install TPX for you.
